How To Complete Your New Year's Resolution

"I'm going to quit smoking for next year.", "I'm going to start exercising.", "I will take myself out of financial constraints". Every year all I hear are the same resolutions, from the same people. Sometimes I wonder if they listen to themselves, because they keep replaying the same message like a broken record. What these people don't understand is that change doesn't happen at the turning of the clock hands towards the new year. It begins when you get MAD (Make A Decision).

It doesn't matter whether you're religious or not but the bible says (not in these words) "If you want to be a new person,
you have to be born again". You must destroy the person you were before, not just a little but completely.

For example, if you decide to stop smoking and someone asks "Would you like a cigarette?" Don't say "No, I don't smoke again" or "No I quit smoking". You need to say " No I don't smoke", as if smoking has never been apart of your life. What this does is, it influences your mind to forget your past habits. It leaves your mind wondering "Does he/she not really smoke?".

The fight that you have to fight is in your mind, it's not with your friends, your family, your situation or your circumstances. After you get MAD the next step to achieving your goal is to keep your goal in mind. Don't forget why you started. Keep reminding yourself how far you are since you've started.

I learnt in physics that inertia is the property of a body that resists any change to its uniform motion. It's the unwillingness in a person to take action, to change. However the thing about inertia is, even though it is very hard to start, once it is started, it is very hard to stop. This phenomenon is characterized by engagement in repetitive behavior, also known as perseveration or perseverance. Just make a decision, it's that simple.

Don't let your emotions or your impulses control you. Just because your stomach's growling, that doesn't mean you have to eat the same time. Or just because you're sad, doesn't mean you have to cry. It's imperative that you remember, you're in control, you call the shots, you are the boss. Don't let anything overcome you.

I heard a true story once of an athlete that said he could run a mile in 4 minutes. Everyone told him it was impossible because no one has ever done it. He did it and proved them wrong and over the course of a few years, over 20,000 people could run a mile in under 4 minutes. Why? Because these people said to themselves "If he can do it, why can't I, we're both human".

So I need you to look at your story and see if it's possible to achieve the task at hand. Has someone else done it? Then you can do it. If no one has ever done it in the history of time, then remember this, "there's a first time for everything".

When it comes to making a change in our lives and head towards our goals, it's hard. But the difference between struggling and suffering is that, the people who are suffering stay down and let their problems beat them down without any resistance, they just accept the beating. Whereas people who are struggling, try to fight back but they keep on losing and no matter how many times they lose they just keep fighting. I have a poem on this blog where I say "Failure is not the end but rather the beginning, The more you lose, the closer you are to winning". Choose your hard, struggling or suffering?

You've seen the movies or videos with the two little guys on a person's shoulder, generally depicted as a little angel and devil. They're real. One is always influencing you to better yourself and to make the right decisions, then there's the other one that's always trying to bring you down or hold you back, telling you "it's alright to give up" and "just sleep for one more hour". Many people often make the mistake of letting the negative voice run the show, leaving no space for positivity until it is destroyed completely.

Fortunately this phenomenon works the other way. If you stay positive, keep doing the things that make you better, then there will be no space for negativity in your life. The difference between losers and winners is when losers fail they quit, but when winners fail they accept failure as a lesson and keep on moving. So If you want to become someone you've never been, you have to do something you've never done.

Stop saying you want to change. Just change!! Success is like Thor's hammer, only the worthy can lift it. Make everyday a new year.
